In the top 100 All Time World Wide Box Office Sales, every single movie is in English. In fact, the majority were American movies. American movies, with all their culture bound references, are somehow able to entertain across cultures and countries. The entertainment industry internationally relies on cultural homogenization. This homogenization can be visualized in the form of the contestants for Miss Universe 2013. The women are from 89 countries. Yet, at a first glance of their head shots this would not seem to be the case. Considering that these women are from all over the world, they look strikingly similar. People are willing to go to frightening lengths to fit into a homogenized standard of international beauty. Some would say that the international box office numbers and the homogenization of beauty criteria are examples of cultural imperialism because they are most closely related to western standards and ideal. However, when people are making a conscious choice to change thier physical apperance and selcte which moives to see, it it truly cultural imperialism?
