Although not of recent importance or knowledge to me, the idea of globalization has recently begun to explain a number of occurrences right here at home in Davidson. In the last 4 years I have unfortunately bared witness to the rewiring of Davidson College’s administration, pay distribution, numerous policies involving the changing of tradition and eradication of other traditions. Each and every year the school would come out with some new thing that results in a loss for the students, and a gain for those running the school. Each and every year I ask myself why is this happening? what is so terrible about my school that the administration so incessantly wants to change it? Well it sort of recently hit me. The school is a part of the whole global trend towards forcing aspects of society and culture deemed unworthy or inappropriate by a few out of society as a whole. In some cases, like in Hong Kong, this is a much more understandable want for change. To allow women the right to vote, however, is not comparable to the miniscule issue of college students drinking underage. But it doesn’t matter how large of a change or how tiny, the intensification of interconnectedness of cultures all around the world will affect us all. Hopefully, however, we can alter this globalization to be less of a homogenization of peoples and places. This can only result in a global nation of sheep following what their masters tell them. This, to me, is not culture or living.
